What do we mean? Do not use live video just because your competition is using it-- you need to have clear and purposeful content related to your brand in order to generate good engagement.
Live video has gained enough popularity that it is safe to say it should be included in your marketing strategy, but it also important to understand the other end of that... it should NOT be your whole marketing strategy. It is just a piece of the puzzle, but the puzzle will not likely be complete without it!
When preparing to shoot a live video, it is easy to want to write out a script and follow it exactly. But this is actually the opposite of what viewers want to see. Live video is supposed to show the fun, humanized version of your brand. So, feel free to organize your thoughts and have an idea of what to say, but when the camera starts rolling, relax, have fun, and be spontaneous!
Although you want to be spontaneous, it is important to brainstorm some "worst case scenarios" and decide what you will do/say in case those occur. Keep in mind-this is LIVE. If something goes wrong during the broadcast, the best you can do it improvise.
Try to eliminate any excessive background noise or movement that could distract from the main object of the video. Sometimes it is useful to be in a high intensity type setting, but other times that only distracts your viewers from what you are saying or even makes it hard to hear what you're saying at all.
Depending on the content of your live video, you might have the intentions of reaching different target audiences. Facebook Live actually gives you the option to specify your audience. The options are (1) public, (2)friends on Facebook, (3)friends except... (choose the friends that you do not want to see it), (4)specific friends, or (5)only me.
Once you find a good day of the week and time of the day to go live, do it consistently. This is how you will build up an audience. Give them something to anticipate and look forward to!
